Earlier this year we partnered with Ontario Christian Gleaners to ship 6,750 bags of dried vegetable soup mix to Jamaica. The soup mix was incorporated into Food For The Poor Jamaica’s food distribution program reaching several groups and individuals with limited access to food.
The recipients were more than happy to share photos showcasing how they have been putting the nutritious soup received to good use. They also expressed their sincere appreciation for the much-needed donation.
The Providence SDA Basic School which offers early childhood level education to children ages three to six years, was one of the many recipients of the soup mix. The institution, which is located in the deep rural community of Williamsfield in Thornton, St. Elizabeth, has a current student population of approximately 67. Mrs. Sandra Wollery, the acting principal, was ecstatic with the donation the school received. She declared, “with the recent promotion of healthy eating in schools, being led by the Ministry of Education, the vegetable mix could not have come at a better time.”
This is the first time that we have ever benefited from this type of item. We read the preparation instructions to soak the vegetable mix, which we did overnight and as a result, we found it easier to cook. I also tasted the soup and I must say, it was very delicious. Everyone ate all their soup, except for one or two students, who would not normally finish their lunch. We really appreciate this donation very much. If you have other food items, we will welcome to support. The entire family of Providence SDA Basic School, including parents, teachers and students, are very thankful for the Vegetable Mix we received.”
