Safe housing provides families with security and stability and helps foster a sense of community and togetherness. Many families across the Caribbean and Latin America lack the basic elements of proper housing, such as water and sanitation. A home gives families a safe and healthy place to raise their children and allow them to focus on other needs such as education and livelihood.

“I’m Joan, and these are my grandsons Omar, Enrique, and Ignacio and we are all living in the house along with two other persons. I’m so happy to have this house and I am grateful to you all. I’m so, so happy. I give thanks to you all for giving me this wonderful house. I will cherish it for the rest of my life.”

In July 2019, a group of former students from Appleby College in Oakville, Ontario raised funds to build a home for Ms. Joan and her family in Cedar Valley, Jamaica. The group constructed the house in one day with the help of Food For The Poor.
